Michigan Suburbs Alliance Mission

At the Michigan Suburbs Alliance we foster and support cooperative approaches to the challenges facing Michigan's metropolitan areas. We believe our communities' interdependence is our greatest strength and that collaboration is the best path to increased prosperity, sustainability and equity across a region. Through innovative initiatives we organize, serve and advocate for a metro's mature cities in order to help them be vibrant, healthy and beautiful communitiespreferred places to live, work and play.

Equal Opportunity Employment Policy

The Michigan Suburbs Alliance is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The organization is committed to maintaining a workplace free of discrimination and harassment. We recruit, hire, train and promote individuals in all positions without regard to race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, sexual orientation, national origin, age, sex, physical or mental disability, being a disabled veteran, veteran of the Vietnam era or other eligible veteran. At the Suburbs Alliance, we are committed to a fair and equitable workplace where everyone is a respected and valued member of the team.

Organizational Background
The Michigan Suburbs Alliance, a nonprofit registered in the State of Michigan, was established by a group of mayors and city managers from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. These leaders gathered in 2002 and agreed to explore how they could work together to educate themselves and the public about the root causes of problems facing older, established suburbs. That year, representatives from fourteen metro Detroit suburban cities unanimously agreed to form the Michigan Suburbs Alliance.

Today, the Suburbs Alliance serves 1,400,000 citizens in 37 municipalities, including its 29 charter member cities. Its primary initiatives include the Millennial Mayors Congress, the Southeast Michigan Regional Energy Office, Redevelopment Ready Communities and UniverCities Connection.

Climate Action Research Volunteer

Want to help the Michigan Suburbs Alliance achieve its mission of a more sustainable and forward-thinking region? We're looking for someone willing to research and write for our climate action planning team. This volunteer will explore local strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, create usable strategy  briefs, and evaluate implementation in the cities of Hazel Park, Southgate and Ypsilanti. The volunteer will build on an existing strategy library, researching new strategies for GHG emissions reductions and creating model issue briefs that can be integrated into small-city climate plans.

We're looking for a volunteer with excellent writing skills, creative and thorough research skills, strong interest in and some knowledge of climate planning and sustainability, and availability to work with us between 5-15 hours per week this summer. If interested, please email Valerie Bieberich at internships@suburbsalliance.org with your resume and scheduling needs. College students, we're happy to discuss options for class credit.
