Mayors & Managers Breakfast attendees discuss

options for revenue sharing

Director's Message

Farewell to a Titan
Dearborn Mayor Michael Guido 1954-2006

My fiancée told me recently about a study showing the effects of teacher training on student test scores.  It appears that novice educators with some basic training are more effective teachers than people who come to the classroom with years of practical subject experience but no methods background.  The most effective of all are those teachers who have both the professional training to be an educator as well as years of experience in the field.   Finish reading

Fore the Good of the Region

Together with Huntington Woods resident Paul Avsharian, the Suburbs Alliance has spearheaded an effort to preserve Rackham Golf Course by forming the Rackham Conservancy.  We need to raise beaucoup bucks to save this regional asset, so shoot us an email if you're interested in helping out or donating.  To learn more about the conservancy, read our press release

Breakfast Wrap

Our inaugural Mayors and Managers Policy Breakfast was a knockout success last month, thanks to the long list of volunteers, the helpful staff at the Wayne Community Center and, of course, all the attendees!  We used the feedback from table discussions in crafting our policy recommendations for revenue sharing.  Read them in our brand new publication, In the Ring, which should hit your desk before the holidays.  If you couldn't make it to the breakfast, take a look at the Idea Book we created, and keep your eyes peeled for details on the next breakfast.

In the News

Last month, six organizations – the Detroit Regional Chamber, Detroit Renaissance, New Detroit, United Way for Southeastern Michigan, Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Cultural Alliance of Southeast Michigan – joined together to create One D: Transforming Regional Detroit.  The group will help communities work together in six areas: economic development, education, regional transit, race relations, regional cooperation and quality of life in an effort to amplify regional unity.  Read about the group's goals here.

New research from the Brookings Institution reveals that for the first time, there are more people living below the poverty line in suburbs than central cities.  The report, which looks at trends from 1999-2005, includes additional analysis on poverty in first suburbs.
