Millennial Magnets

A few days ago I came to the startling realization that I am not as individualistic as I once thought.  My fascination with place, my insistence on a home within walking/biking distance of work and play, my less-than-lukewarm desire to get married in the near future  – things I’d previously summed up as a unique worldview evolved from personal growth and maturation – actually turned out to be a set of general characteristics shaped by a suburban childhood and shared by 78 million other Americans between the ages of 11 and 30.  As it turns out, I’m simply a millennial.

The National Brownfields Conference is coming to Detroit in May 2008, and the Suburbs Alliance is part of the local planning committee.  If you have ideas for local tours or speaking sessions, send them to Melanie Piana by June 15 or submit them on the Brownfields 2008 website.

Congratulations to Greg Pitoniak, President of the Suburbs Alliance Board of Directors, who has been named the new head of the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance! Greg will assume his new role at SEMCA on June 18th.

At our annual meeting on May 11, Suburbs Alliance Charter Members elected four new members to our Board of Directors.  We proudly welcome Mayor of Southfield Brenda Lawrence, Dearborn Council President Tom Tafelski, Maxine Berman of the Governor's Office of Southeast Michigan, and Dr. Robin Boyle of Wayne State University! The Engineering Society of Detroit is holding a special event on Tuesday, June 12, featuring Victor M. Mercado, director of Detroit Water and Sewage Department, who will discuss a master plan to address the future water needs of southeast Michigan. The House We Live In: Race and Urban Development in Metro Detroit

 

The event is part of ACCESS's Building Capacity Through Diversity Project. They will show the film “The House We Live In” (episode 3 of the series Race: the Power of an Illusion), which is historical in nature and follows the role that race has played in our country throughout the last century, especially after WWII, in the development of suburbs, urban housing, and transportation.  It also examines how federal policies played a role in creating the urban-suburban racial divide that characterizes so many metropolitan areas' land use patterns and development. Summer in the City
The Michigan Suburbs Alliance is teaming up with Summer in the City for its 6th summer of building regionalism through community service.  Volunteers from across metro Detroit will be joining the Jefferson East Business Association in advance of "Jazzin’ on Jefferson," their annual neighborhood festival, to paint buildings and plant flowers on the avenue as well as run activities with neighborhood youth.  For more information, visit www.summerinthecitydetroit.org or email Brittany.

Local Diabetes Seminars

The American Diabetes Association and Great Lakes Medical Supply are partnering to provide Diabetes Review, a seminar series designed to educate Metro Detroiters of all races in managing the disease.
