Mahoney Named Guardian Angel of the Year by Monroe County United Way

Congratulations to Charlie Mahoney, our highly treasured community access builder! United Way of Monroe County has named her the Guardian Angel of the Year for her unparalleled commitment to community service. Charlie has been working with the Suburbs Alliance since 2004 as the key liaison to the Metro Detroit Regional Investment Initiative, but clearly, that's just the start of her community building efforts! Charlotte "Charlie" Mahoney, a thirty-three year resident of Livonia, received the United Way of Monroe County’s Guardian Angel of the year award at the organization’s Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition. The event was held Wednesday, March 28 at the Monroe Golf & Country Club.
This award is an ongoing tribute to Debbie Zmijewski, director of United Way’s First Call For Help and Volunteer Action Center from June 1991 until her untimely passing from cancer in August of 2000. Mahoney received an individual plaque and a tribute signed by Senator Randy Richardville, State Representative Kate Ebli both of Monroe and Governor Jennifer Granholm. A permanent plaque, which houses a picture and short biography of Zmijewski, is on display at the United Way office. The Award is presented annually to an outstanding volunteer in recognition of his or her contributions to the community.
“Charlie Mahoney is one of Monroe County's most valuable assets. She has been involved and is still involved in many projects that benefit the people of Monroe County. She is most deserving of our Volunteer of the Year Award for 2006,” said Michael D. Hoydic, Executive Director of the United Way of Monroe County.
Mahoney served as president of the United Way of Monroe County Board of Directors from 2004 to 2006, and completed 7 years of service on the Board. She served as the United Way’s Campaign Chair for the successful 1997 fundraising drive. As president of the United Way Board, Mahoney emphasized collaboration and community impact. She was instrumental in the development of the Monroe County Health Plan, of which she remains the president. She was the catalyst for the Habitat for Humanity Youth Build, assembling a community committee that raised the funds for the first Monroe High School youth built home for Habitat for Humanity. Mahoney also spearheaded the establishment of the United Way of Monroe County’s Health Check Program which is a collaborative effort between the United Way of Monroe County, Mercy Memorial Hospital System, Family Medical Center of Michigan, Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Monroe County, and The Monroe County Health Department. Health Check makes low cost and free medical health tests and screening available to the public.
Mahoney is President of Four-M Associates, a community outreach-consulting firm and a board member of Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc.. She is retired from DTE Energy where she was Regional Manager for Corporate and Public Affairs and the DTE Energy representative to Monroe County. Even after her retirement she has remained a devoted Monroe community asset. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Active Balanced Community Initiative with a mission to improve the lives of youth and family in Monroe County. Mahoney continues to serve on the Communications/Civic Engagement Committee for this initiative. Most recently she is working to build community support for the Monroe County’s Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness. Mahoney also chairs the newly formed 2 1 1 Advisory Group for the County.
Mahoney is a member of the Monroe Exchange Club, Monroe Business and Professional Women. She is an honorary member of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce. In addition to her Monroe volunteer activities she is also very involved in her home town of Livonia where she is on the Family YMCA and Symphony boards, serves as the chair for the Livonia Chamber’s Government Issues Committee and is a Civil Service Commissioner and a member of the Livonia Economic Development Committee. Mahoney, a member of the Livonia Branch of American Association of University Women, was the 1997 Livonia Chamber Athena award winner. She is also a longtime member and past president of Inforum (previously the Women’s Economic Club).
Mahoney has been married to Winom J. for 37 years has two sons, Jason in Austin, Texas and Sean in Livonia and one granddaughter, Dara.
